As part of an ongoing series of blogs, we interview suppliers from the UK Trade and Construction Industry

In our industry there are a lot of suppliers, merchants, tool manufacturers, sometimes it can be quite hard to keep up with who does what. So, we decided it would be a good idea to introduce some of these interesting companies!

Last month we spoke to the great team from Book A Builder UK, today we are chatting to SumUp.

We love SumUp, it's by far the easiest and quickest way to get paid both on and offline. Disclaimer, we are partners with SumUp and have a really nifty integration with Powered Now. If you want to know more use the chat on the website!

Right, onto the interview!

Tell us a little about SumUp, the 30 seconds elevator pitch.

SumUp is a global fintech company and the leading mobile point-of-sale (mPOS) company in Europe. Our end-to-end payment solution enables merchants around the world to accept card payments anywhere their business takes them, whether it’s at the point of sale or on the go.

SumUp technology makes accepting payments simple so merchants can focus on what they do best, whether they’re brewing coffee or fixing cars. We offer a range of easy-to-use card readers and cashless payment solutions suited to a variety of businesses, all at an affordable cost.

Our mission is to provide small businesses with powerful tools to succeed, and their success is our success.

How can trade businesses benefit from card and link payments?

The benefit of using a SumUp card reader to accept all types of cashless payments from your customers is simple: you never have to miss a sale. Accepting credit, debit and contactless payments makes your business flexible and accessible to more and more clients.

SumUp card readers can be used via 3G or WiFi connection, so you can accept payments wherever you are. Using SumUp Payment Links is also a great way to get paid on the go—just send a link to your customers via SMS or WhatsApp and they can pay you remotely.

Mobile payments are extremely handy when it comes to getting paid for your services during the current COVID-19 crisis. You can rest assured that for you and your clients, payment will always be contactless and safe.

Are you seeing increased demand from trade businesses? If so, why?

It’s clear that most categories of merchants have been hugely affected by COVID-19 over the past 12 months. SumUp has 3 million active merchants across 34 countries, with a wide variety of merchant types using our solutions. From your local cafe who have been forced to close for long periods of time to the food truck owners who usually thrive off serving the lunchtime masses in commercial areas, everyone has suffered.

Trade businesses have also been limited in terms of how much they have been able to operate. However, we have seen that as a collective merchant category it has shown steady transaction rates over the past 12 months. Whether it’s sorting out a broken toilet or getting round to home improvement projects, there has still been a consistent demand. With our remote payment solutions and partners such as Powered Now, tradespeople have been able to keep business going and drive contactless card payments during the COVID-19 crisis.

What are your plans for the remainder of this year, anything interesting you would like to announce?

This year is proving to be action-packed and was kicked off with incredibly exciting news for SumUp. We closed another funding round to continue building towards our vision. We promise to keep doing what we do—empowering those 3 million small businesses globally to be successful in doing what they love. With SumUp expanding to operate in 34 markets and welcoming Goodtill, Tiller and Paysolut to the team, we have many reasons to celebrate. We’re now over 2,600 SumUppers strong, and this recent investment is a testament to the hard work of the SumUp team who came together stronger than ever over the last year. The future is bright for SumUp.

Do you have any advice for anyone thinking about payment solutions?

If your business is based on services or products that you’re paid for every day, payment solutions are a no-brainer. We know that every business can thrive with a payment solution that fits their needs, so choosing the right one is important.

Here are some questions you can ask yourself when picking the payment solution for you:

  • Where will I use my mPOS?
  • If you’re always on the go, a device like the SumUp 3G Card Reader will always keep you connected and allow you to accept payments anywhere. If you usually have a WiFi connection and a Bluetooth device at hand, devices like the SumUp Air will do the job perfectly.
  • Do I need backup payment methods?
  • You might not always be face-to-face with your customers, or there may be times where there isn’t a card present to make a transaction. Products like SumUp Payment Links and Invoices make sure you can always get paid no matter what situation you find yourself in.
  • What will a payment solution cost?
  • Every business is different, so you should only pay for what you need. With SumUp, you pay a one-off price for your device and a fixed fee per transaction. There is a range of devices and bundles to choose from, with no monthly costs or binding contracts.
